Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The main target of the expedition was the investigation of the diversity of the deep sea benthic fauna of the eastern Mediterranean deep sea and its correlation with abiotic and biotic parameters, particularly with depth and distance to coast.This study of the diversity covered all size classes from microbes to megafauna.For an adequate sampling a sufficient number of replicates is required. This is why work was restricted to two areas with three sampling station within each area. 5 replicate samples with the multicorer and 8 replicates with the box corer as well as 4 epibenthic sledge tows abnd 3-4 beamtrawls per area will allow to estimate the representativity of the fauna caught at the individual stations. Through this, the factors governing the diversity and productivity will be better understood. The final target is the estimation of the relative importance of pelagic production versus lateral transport for explaining diversity patterns in the extremely oligotrophic Levantine Basin. The operations started by mapping the seabed with a multibeam sounder. Sampling with the mentioned gear took place on three stations, which were about 10 nm apaert from each other and lasted until January 4, 2007 21.23 UTC. The second investigation area (Ierapetra Basin) was reached on January 5, 2007 at 02.33 UTC. The same operations on similarly positioned 3 stations went on until January 14, 2007.
