Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The objectives of the cruise were 1) to examine cyanobacterial blooms, 2) to carry out HELCOM monitoring (hyrdoraphy) in the Gulf of Finland, 3) to make bio-optical measurements, 4) to collect sediment cores, 5) to carry out echsounding work especially in the EEZ area of Finnish waters and 6) to collect benthic animals. The tasks listed were completed. We observed that oxygen conditions in the Northern Baltic Proper and especially Gulf of Finland had got worse. Near-bottom phosphate levels had also increased from the previous. Cyanobacterial blooms were less intense than on the average, but they however contained rather high quantites of liver toxins as usual. Sediment coring was successful especially in terms of EEZ area (an about 7 m-core). Despite the worsened oxygen depletion, benthic communities were still present in the Gulf of Finland in the two locations examined.
