Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Acoustic survey, conducted with an annual periodicity, to assess and map the pelagic (neritic) resources and the oceanographic and biological conditions of the Gulf of Cadiz continental shelf (both Spanish and Portuguese waters, ICES Subdivision IXa South). The survey season coincides with the anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) peak spawning in order to estimate the anchovy SSB by echo-integration. The acoustic sampling for assessment by echo-integration is performed during daylight hours. Biological characterization of the pelagic community is sampled by opportunistic pelagic trawls (for identification of echo-traces), which are also performed during the day. Ancillary biological information (fish eggs) sampled with CUFES (Continuous Underway Fish Egg Sampler) and coupled to the acoustic sampling. Occurrence of sea birds, turtles, and mammals is also recorded along the acoustic transects. Oceanographic characterization of the surveyed area from both discrete (CTD profiles in night stations) and continuous sampling (Thermosalinometer-fluorimeter) coupled to the CUFES sampling. Additional night pelagic trawls were also performed in order to collate some extra biological material and to carry out specific experiments (e.g., in situ determination of the anchovy target strength, TS; nictimeral behavior').

Eggs/larvae
Fish eggs continuously sampled with CUFES (Continuous Underway Fish Egg Sampler) along the acoustic transects. The ?station? is the eggs sample collected after integrating the water volume sampled each 3 nm. In some transects the stations occurred in waters deeper than 200 m because of the presence of anchovy eggs in such waters. no

Pelagic fish
37 valid hauls according to gear performance and catches. Hauls conducted with a pelagic trawl during daylight hours, but 3 hauls during the night (for an in situ determination of anchovy TS and collection of extra biological material). Fishing performed just after detection of echo-traces of interest, with the fishing tracks either over the acoustic transect or crossing it, following a determinate isobath. Mean duration of effective fishing about 45 minutes. Data collection per haul of: speci no

Sub-surface measurements underway (T, S)
Subsurface Temperature, Salinity and Fluorescence recorded with thermosalinometer-fluorimeter (SBE 21 SEACAT). Although variables were recorded all the cruise, the data stored for further processing corresponded to the acoustic transects & CUFES stations. In fact, GPS-Acoustics-CUFES-Thermosalinometer data recording was synchronised. no
