Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Within the Research Center Ocean Margins (RCOM) the topic of gas and fluid seepage is studied in four different subprojects. Cross-disciplinary investigations should reveal the key process at fluid seeps that lead to different types of seeps at the seafloor. For example, some seeps are dominated by the build-up of large carbonate structures whereas at others unknown processes lead to the formation of morphological depressions (pockmarks). A further question concerns the amount and fate of methane that escape either dissolved in advecting fluids or as gas bubbles from the seafloor. The key question is whether or not the potent green-house gas methane is reaching the atmosphere. We follow within the RCOM a multi-scale approach. Questions concerning the small- scale biochemical interactions between microbes are addressed at the same time as those topics dealing with the question whether or not methane from cold seeps contribute to climate change. ROV QUEST is the main tool to answer these questions. It will be used for the purposes of mapping (Video mosaiking), sampling (carbonates, sediments, organisms) and as platform for the deployment and recovery of in-situ tools designed to measure chemical gradients and fluid fluxes.
