Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The working area for 'Solea' was confined to the South-Eastern North Sea between 52? 00'N and 55? 30'N, and the 20 m depth line off the English, Dutch, Danish and German coasts (see attached map). Acoustic measurements were conducted between 06:00 and 20:00 on East-West or North-South transects with 7.5, 15 or 30 NM spacing. For the identification of echo traces and further biological sampling, 31 hauls with a pelagic net were conducted. After each haul or about each 30 nautical miles 64 CTD profiles were recorded. In addition within small rectangles during nights 'whale clicks' were recorded. Objectives: Calibration of the hydroacoustic equipment, hydroacoustic recording of pelagic fish stocks, biological sampling for the verification of echoes, hydrographic investigations. Narrative: FRV 'Solea' left the port of Cuxhaven on June 29th in the afternoon. The first trail to calibrate close to Helgoland was not successful. But late at 55? 21'N, 006? 01'E the hydroacoustic equipment was calibrated under sufficient conditions in the morning of June 30th. Therefore, it was not necessary to sail to Kristiansand. The vessel surveyed the area where mostly juvenile herring was expected. The vessel reached Cuxhaven on 17th July 2006 in the evening, having sailed 3046 NM. Whale research An extended cruise report giving age disaggregated abundance and biomass of clupeids and detailed hydrographic data will be available after final data and sample evaluation at the end of this year.
