Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The overall goal of cruise M68/1, which is part of the DFG Special Priority Program 1144, is the investigation of hydrothermal activity on the southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR, 4-10?S). Previous cruises (JR 65a in 2001, M62/5 in 2004 and M64/1 and CD169 in 2005) yielded the first samples of hydrothermal fields south of the large equatorial fracture zones as well as picking up signals of other possible systems along the ridge. Cruise M68/1 builds on the work of these previous cruises in order to (a) provide a quantitative estimate of the regional distribution of hydrothermal activity between 4?S and 10?S, (b) establish the volcano-tectonic setting of this activity, (c) determine the factors that influence fluid and mineral compositions and temporal variability, and (d) evaluate the role of the large equatorial fracture zones as possible biogeographic filters between the northern and the southern MAR. This includes mapping and exploration for additional hydrothermal vent systems on a regional scale and sampling of hydrothermal vent fluids, associated vent fauna, host rock and sulphides. Hydrothermal prospecting and plume mapping was carried out with CTD deployments and the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) ?ABE' from WHOI, which also carried out near-bottom swath mapping and photographic surveys in areas of highest interest. Combined measurements of gases and metals together with physical properties (T, S, turbidity, currents) provide an estimate of the fluxes from the hydrothermal vents. During ROV Quest (MARUM) dives, chemical, biological and geological samples were obtained. Further geological samples were obtained from rock corer and dredge deployments.
