Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The cruise served primarily the transfer of the new ship from Helsinki to Rostock after the first expedition into the frozen northern Baltic basins. During transit technical tests with instruments were performed, which were newly developed or modified and which have previously not been employed under conditions far below the freezing point. On a station at the eastern slope of the Gotland basin a positioning test with a uv-camera attached to a pump-CTD-system was performed to explore the potential of this set for high-resolution sampling of the benthic boundary layer. A set of pilot gravity cores were obtained on the slope of the basin in order to detect depressions with undisturbed accumulation histories which would be sampled at later occasions. Ship and scientific background for the operation of research vessels of this design were presented to the media (press and TV-teams)
