Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

An alternative beam trawl technique ('Pulskor') is under development in which instead of tickler chains electrical stimuli (pulses) are used to chase plaice and sole out of the bottom into the net. After a series of experiments with the research vessel 'Tridens', the gear is installed on a beam trawler to test its operational safety and viability of the system when used for a prolonged period of time in various fishing grounds and heavy weather. A second objective is to collect economic data (landings, maintenance, fuel costs) for a feasibility analysis. In this analysis these records are compared with those of four commercial beamers fishing in the conventional way. Thirdly, comparative studies are conducted of catches and discards by simultaneously sampling programmes on board of the UK153 and on a conventional beamer fishing near by. Data collected on board: - Technical features of the system (monitored automatically by computer) - Standard monitoring of catches and discards in both gears; - Monitoring en test with technical features of the system - Monitoring of co-variables (fishing speed, weather, type of soil etc.)
