Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Besides the supply of the German Neumayer station, trawls for deep-sea plankton and Fish Traps off Bouvet Island and Agassiz bottom trawls were done. A long term observatory was deployed on the sea floor by an Italian group. After that, the core project started, the Lazarev Sea Krill Study (LAKRIS), which is aimed at providing a better understanding of the role of Krill in the Southern Ocean ecosystem. The Lazarev Sea was covered by a regular grid of 85 stations between 60? and 70? S, and 3? E and 6? W using a CTD-sonde together with a multi-bottle sampler, a Rectangular Midwater Trawl, a Multinet and other nets. Also three oceanographic moorings were recovered and redeployed. En route, currents were measured by ADCP and zooplankton backscatter measurements were recorded by an echosounder. When crossing the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, a continuous plankton recorder was towed.
