Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
This cruise focused on the sea-ice research. The aim was to collect in-situ and airborne data for i) validation the ASIRAS (Airborne Synthetic Aperture Interferometric Radar Altimeter System), ii) validation of the IRIS route selection routine and operational sea-ice models, and iii) validation of ridged ice detections algorithms of the ASAR data. \nIn-situ observations were made in the North-East region of the Bay of Bothnia. An ice station was established in the vicinity of Aranda. Calibration lines for the airborne measurements were established and the in-situ measurements were made along the calibration lines. Following measurements will be made with 1 - 300 meters intervals : ice thickness drilling with augers and hot-water drills, estimation of the mean density (or void fraction) of the ridges, ice thickness profiling with a sledged Geonics EM-31 instrument. freeboard profiling, snow thickness and density, salinity and structure measurements of the ice and snow.
