Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Primary objective of Meteor-Cruise M65/2 was to investigate sedimentation processes and pathways at the (sub)tropical continental margin off Senegal as well as a closer analysis of sediment sources and sediment movements around Cap Timiris Canyon, which was discovered during Meteor-Cruise M58/1. The main target of the investigations off Senegal is the development of a model, which describes the transport dynamics of sediments from shallow waters into the deep sea for a tropical area. The work in the area of Cap Timiris Canyon will focus on the evolution of the canyon based on an analysis of sediment pathways and their temporal variability. Investigations of dinoflagellate cysts were carried out in the entire working area. Additionally moored sediment traps were maintained off Cap Blanc.
