Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The project is generally aimed at achieving a better understanding of the dynamics of the circulation processes of the seas around the UK. In order to characterise the extent and nature of density driven and seasonal jet-like circulation which acts as a direct and rapid pathway for transport of material. CEND1404 is the third in a series of cruises in Autumn 2004 (ref Corystes 1304, CEND 1204) to examine change over this 2 month period from the warmest, most stratified conditions through the breakdown period. Over the 10 day cruise we i) recovered ADCP moorings ii) performed Scanfish (undulating CTD, fluorescence and light) surveys. Iii) Underway surface chlorophyll, nutrients, POC/PON and DOC/DON sampling iv) CTD rosette stations with chlorophyll, nutrients, POC/PON, DOC/DON and Oxygen sampling. V) NIOZ core stations in an area of retention The mooring recoveries were performed first, located towards the eastern extreme of British waters north on the northern slope of Dogger Bank. We then performed a large scale Scanfish and CTD survey between this region and the north eastern coast of England. With good weather we were able to extend the survey into waters up to 57? North before completing the cruise with Nioz cores in the Farne Deeps and an end of cruise CTD repeat stations along the line of the first Scanfish section where the moorings had also been positioned.
