Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The distributions and activities of selected prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial communities were investigated in the pelagic environment of the Central Baltic Sea with suboxic and anoxic deep water. In particular, the re-establishment after the seawater inflow from the North Sea during 2003 and the resulting oxygenation of the deep basins in the Gotland Sea. Molecular techniques as 16S and 18S rDNA fingerprinting, in situ hybridization were applied as well as stable isotope (15N) techniques Samples for bacteriochlorophyll analyses were collected, and light attenuation and spectral composition were measured. Water samples were collected from selected depths for enrichment of several physiological groups of bacteria, including heterotrophic aerobes, nitrate-, manganese-, and sulfate reducers, as well as aerobic and anaerobic ammonium and manganese oxidizers.
