Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Leg 5 of AHAB sampled surface sediments by multicores and gravity cores in the area between 22?S and 27?S offshore Namibia to reconstruct variations in the oceanographic, chemical, and biological environment of the coastal upwelling area over the last 1000 years. A further objective was to improve the coverage of shallow acoustic survey lines in the diatomaceous mud belt. This contributes to the investigation of gas eruptions from gas-charges sediments on the shelf. Routine work on stations included CTD casts, water sampling, multicorer deployments, and grab sampling of surface sediments, and a grid of sediment echosoundings (SEL96) perpendicular to the coastline. At several stations, a ROV obtained some illustrative footage of the surface sediments that were densely covered with bacterial mats.
