Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Geo-biological investigations of aphotic coral reef systems and carbonate mounds in the NE-Atlantic. M61-1 was a multidisciplinary cruise addressing biological, paleo-geological and hydrographical scientific objectives in the carbonate mound province west of Ireland in the eastern Porcupine Seabight (Galway Mound area) and on the Rockall Bank. M61/1 activities are embedded within the ESF-DFG "Moundforce" project of the EUROMARGINS Programme. Investigations are also designed as a preparatory cruise for the EU-project HERMES (Hotspot Ecosystem Research on the Margins of European Seas (start April 2005). All institutions participating in M61-1 are partners in HERMES Work package "Coral Reef and Carbonate Mound Systems". Gears employed: Lander Deployments, OFOS, MOCNESS Net, Parasound, Multibeam bathymetry, CTD/Rosette, Box Corer, Multiple Corer, Van Veen Grab, Gravity Corer, TV Grab
