Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

In the context of the EU SIBER project research on the diatom spring bloom in the Baltic Sea was conducted. Conditions for onset of the phytoplankton spring bloom at different stations were measured (in a transect) from the coast to the open sea. Further aims were getting water samples for mesocosm enrichment exper. and analysing water samples to give detailed information about the winter water nutrient condition, phytoplankton species composition and biogenic silcate. As part of the long term deployment of the Chemistry In Situ Pump (ISP) measuring the lateral flux of organic contaminants in the bottom water layer at the Darss Sill, the ISP was recovered on the 2.3.04. The filter and XAD samples were recovered and replaced with a new set. In parallel the batteries were changed and other routine maintenance carried out. The ISP was re-deployed on 4.3.04 for a further 2 month period.
