Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The aim of the cruise was to investigate the postglacial history of the Oder estuary in the area of the Szczecin Lagoon and in the waters off Usedom Island in the Pomeranian Bay, Baltic Sea. In total we obtained 23 sediment cores max. 4 meters long. The cores were described and sampled for later analyses of sedimentology and bio-stratigraphy. The sedimentological and stratigraphical structure of the sediment profiles in general can be described as follow: The basement is the Glacial till of the Weichselian ice age. On top of this we found late-Glacial sands partly including layers of humous substances of the Allerod interstadial time. This sequence was followed by limnic and fluviatile sands and gravel of the early Holocene, finally covered by calcareous mud's and peat's an top. The Littorina transgression leads to a marine environment and deposition of organic rich sandy muds and silts
