Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The major goal of the MEGAPRINT (=Multidisciplinary Examination of Galapagos Plume Ridge INTeraction ) project is to map geochemical gradients in volcanic rocks between the Galapagos Islands and the Galapagos Spreading Center in order to improve our understanding of the chemical structure of mantle plumes and of material transfer from plumes to nearby ocean ridges. The cruise started at Easter Islands, Chile, focused on the area north of the Galapagos Archipelago and ended at Guayaquil, Ecuador. Furthermore, MEGAPRINT should provide informations on morphology, hydrothermalism, plate tectonics and deep sea organisms in this area.
