Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The main objective was to carry out measurements and water sampling in the water column and the near-bottom water layer as well as the study of the local tectonics and the recovery of hard rock and sediment samples to find out whether in the area of the Lesser Antilles island are indications of recent to subrecent submarine hydrothermal activity exist. The work also includes microbial and zoological studies which are important tools to characterize the type and state of hydrothermalism. The western slope of the Lesser Antilles was selected as target area since the islands of this voleanic are have many shallow water thermal springs and hold active volvanoes. Indications of hydro thermalism were found in the form of hydrothermal manganese oxide crusts and of chemical anomalies in the water column. The latter was found predominantley in area 4 at the submarine volcano "Kickem Jenny".
