Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The main objective of cruise SO 144/3b was systematic rock sampling of the seismic ridge and other volcanic structures belonging to the "Galapagos Volcanic System". Additional objectives were to preserve and evaluate any biological material recovered with the rock samples, and to obtain bathymetric, parasound and magnetic profiles over the survey area. Furthermore a series of OBS from Scripps were recovered and redeployed off the coast of Costa Rica. SO 144/3b is part of the interdisciplinary "PAGANINI" - project. The main goal of PAGANINI is to achieve a better understanding of the geo dynamic processes of the Galapagos system (www.geomar.de/projekte/papanini/index.html)
