PAGANINI: PAnama Basin and GAlapagos Plume - New INvestigation of Intraplate Magmatism Geological study of the "Galapagos Volcanic System" with geophysical and biological tasks. a. Systematic sampling of volcanic rocks in the area between Galapagos Islands and Central South America from aseismic ridges and associated seamounts, b. Hydoacoustic and magnetic data were continously reorded, c. Preserve and evaluate any biological material recovered with rock samples. Major volcanological and geochemical objectives. A1. Recontruct the geol. evolution of the Galapagos Archipelago A2. Reconstruct the geochemical evolution of the Galapagos hotspot A3. Establish the origin of aseicmic ridges and associated seamounts A4. Establish the mass balance of the Central America subduction system.
