Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

BGR, GEOMAR, IfM-Kiel and the NIO-Karachi and the Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan carried out a co-operative geological/geochemical project investigating the Makran accretionary wedge off Pakistan. The research on fluid venting and gas seeps included the 'Detection of laterally methane plumes in the water column at 300, 600 ' 800 and 2100 ' 2500 m water depth. 'Detection of small-scale gas expulsion-structures, pock-marks, cold seep" with white bacterial mats. 'Study of microbial (sulfide and methane-oxidizing) communities and colonies of vent biota (Calyptogena, Solemya, pogonophoran tubes) near methane-H2S seeps 'Discovery of inactive mud diapirs with elevations up to 60 m above the surrounding Oman abyssal plain. 'Heatflow and interpretation of Bottom Simulating Reflector data 'Recovery of sediment cores for paleooceanographic and paleoclimatiological studies.
