Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Geophysical experiments were conducted to investigate the Alpha Ridge in the Central Arctic Ocean. On the way to Siberia the easternmost part of the Lomonosov Ridge was investigated. Geological sampling investigated the Quaternary environmental condition, in particular from basement rocks of both ridges. 3-Ecosystem investigations of the ice-covered deep Arctic basins including the ridges, and the benthic compartments with its shortage of organic matter and dependance of horizontal advection. 4-First quantitative samples from the benthic deep sea environment in the Alpha Ridge region were obtained. Our main interest was to get samples for quantitative investigations on animals of smallest body size (<1000?m). 5-Investigation of the distribution of sea-ice thickness along the transpolar current system. 6-Oceanographic investigations of the water masses.
