Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Cruise So 134 and the interdisciplinary project HYFIFLUX II aimed at the study of the complex interactive processes in a hydrothermal field in the North Fjfi Basin. In the N 15? segment of the Central Fiji Ridge, a fossil hydrothermal field was sampled and an active hydrothermal field with diffusely renting low-temperature (<15? C) hydrothermal fluids was intensely investigated. A newly developed system (Hydro Bottom Station, HBS) was used to monitor and sample these fluids. The samples taken include basaltic rocks, hydrothermal ore, seawater and hydrothermal fluid, hydrothermal fauna and mirco-organisms. In another field further in the south, no active hydrothermalism was observed. The objectives of the project following analyses of the samples are the investigations of geo-bio interfaces in the hydrothermal system and of the geological and geochemical evolution of this area.
