Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The shallow seismic cruise is the part of the initial phase of the EC-funded project SUBGATE. SUBGATE is embedded within the ELOISE program (European Land-Ocean interaction Studies) which started in March 1998. (Submarine Groundwater-fluxes And Transport-processes from methane-rich coastal sedimentary Environments) with Danish, British, Greece, and German project partners. The study focuses on sites in the western Irish Sea, Kattegat and western Baltic Sea (Little Belt and Eckernforde Bay) where pockmarks and other features indicating gas and fluid accumulations are known. The projects main goal is to quantify and model submarine groundwater fluxes and transport processes in these coastal environments under special emphasis of the methane cycle.
