Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The main objectives were to quantify the impact of climate fluctuations on the marine Mediterranean paleoenvironment (paleoproductivity, deep water formation) during the Quaternary. On this basis of short and long sediment cores we plan to investigate the temporal and spatial fluctuations of a number of proxies, such as the UK 37 index, bacterial communities, species assemblages of dinoflagellates and foraminifera, and the stable nitrogen, oxygen and carbon isotope compositions of calcareous foraminiferal tests and organic carbon. Additionally, the absolute dating of tephra layers will provide an independant stratigraphic framework. In the Urania Basin it is planned to investigate bacterial communities and the metal budget to learn more about diagenesis and the sedimentation processes under anoxic environmental conditions.
