Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The aime of the cruise was to sample the spreading axis of the mid-atlantic ridge between 6?S and 11?S in order to study the possible influence of a mantle plume on the spreading axis. Dredge sampling stations were taken every ~3 miles along the neo volcanic zone as well as on two off-axis seamounts east of the spreading axis. Some 200 samples of volcanic rocks were recovered and will be used for petrological and geochemical studies. Except for two dredges in the ascension fracture zone which recovered gabbros all other dredgees recovered basalts.
