Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The primary cruise objective was to dredge in situ rock samples from the three large, presumably Cretaceous, seamounts in the Rockall Trough. These samples were collected in order to establish via high precision Ar-40/Ar-39 age dating, in combination with compositional studies, whether a mantle plume existed in the Rockall Trough region during the Cretaceous. Following the post-cruise analytical phase of this project, the influence of such a Cretaceous plume on the rifting of the Rockall Trough will be established by re-evaluating the extensive amount of geophysical data already published for the region in light of the POS 241 results.
