Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
RV Valdivia cruise V171 was carried out by the Institut fur Meereskunde of the University of Hamburg. The cruise had several objectives: to educate undergraduate students in the handling of oceanographic instrumentation and in the collection and analysis of field data, to map the cold overflow from the Norwegian Sea into the Icelandic Basin, to identify the processes that are responsible for the mixing of the overflow plume with the ambient water of the North Atlantic and to quantify their relative contributions, and to test three autonomous YoYo CTD systems.
